Care of Jewellery

Our Recommendations

  1.  Get into the habit of always putting your jewellery on last as a finishing touch after getting ready for your day ahead.

  2. Also get into the habit of removing your jewellery when entering a Sea Pool Shower, the gym, working in the garden or doing any household tasks. (Chlorine, detergents, oils, perfume, make-up and hair spray all contain chemicals which can dull the finish of the metal).

  3. Gently wipe jewellery clean with a soft cloth after each wear to remove any chemicals and oils from the skin.

  4. Thoroughly dry jewellery after exposure to water.  Moisture can cause tarnishing and can weaken springs and clasps.

  5. Gold-plated silver jewellery can be cleaned with warm soapy water, but it must be rinsed thoroughly, dried, and then gently wiped with a soft clean dry cloth.

Gold Jewellery

We are a stockist of 9kt and 18kt gold jewellery, and - like silver - gold can tarnish, but will retain its shine and colour by using a gold polishing cloth or a gold liquid cleaner.

GOLD VERMEIL

Gold-plated jewellery is made by using electricity or chemicals to deposit and bond a very thin layer of gold over another metal (such as silver). The process creates a layer as thin as 1/1000 to 3/1000 of an inch of gold over a more affordable metal.

It is long-lasting and also easy to keep it shiny: simply use a gentle polishing cloth and avoid getting it wet or exposing it to chemicals.

GOLD FILLED

Jewellers create gold-filled jewellery by pressure bonding an actual layer of gold to another metal. Depending on the manufacturer, it is in all cases significantly thicker than regular gold plating. Gold-filled jewellery can be worn daily without fear of fading or rubbing off for many years.

Care of Pearl Jewellery

Pearls naturally darken with age and wear. The creamy colour they develop cannot be removed even through professional cleaning. However, pearls that naturally darken are just as desirable in colour as they have naturally taken on a life of their own.

Consider storing your pearls in a silk, velvet or satin-based bag or box, to prevent scratches from other items of jewellery. Do not store in plastic bags - some plastics can emit a chemical that over a time will cause pearls to deteriorate.

Long term care: Avoid long term exposure to light, as this will turn pearls yellow. Strong light or heat above 140f (60c) will cause pearls to dry and crack.

CLEANING

Avoid cleaning with harsh chemicals or brushes that could damage the surface. When possible only use mineral or distilled water to rinse the pearls (standard tap water contains chlorine and other chemicals that can damage the surface of your pearls). Polish your pearls with a dry soft cloth to maintain their lustre.
