Care of Pearl Jewellery

Pearls naturally darken with age and wear. The creamy colour they develop cannot be removed even through professional cleaning. However, pearls that naturally darken are just as desirable in colour as they have naturally taken on a life of their own.

Consider storing your pearls in a silk, velvet or satin-based bag or box, to prevent scratches from other items of jewellery. Do not store in plastic bags - some plastics can emit a chemical that over a time will cause pearls to deteriorate.

Long term care: Avoid long term exposure to light, as this will turn pearls yellow. Strong light or heat above 140f (60c) will cause pearls to dry and crack.

CLEANING

Avoid cleaning with harsh chemicals or brushes that could damage the surface. When possible only use mineral or distilled water to rinse the pearls. (Standard tap water contains chlorine and other chemicals that can damage the surface of your pearls). Polish your pearls with a dry soft cloth to maintain their lustre.
